The Discover Music Series is a new musical outreach program at the East Islip Public Library, 381 Montauk Highway in East Islip.
This series features 1-hour-long history and live performances by an eclectic, entertaining and very talented variety of musicians.
All programs are on Thursdays and begin at 7 PM. Seating is limited, and is on a first-come basis. The Library is handicapped accessible.

Buddy Merrian – Discover Bluegrass and the Bill Monroe Story

Buddy Merriam, host of WUSB’s “Blue Grass Time” radio program radio program for 19 years and leader of Buddy Merriam & Back Roads will speak about Bluegrass Music & it’s creator Bill Monroe This is music that honors its roots but is not bound to them. Buddy had a close personal and musical relationship with Bill Monroe and Bill's influence is evident here, in Buddy's beautiful mandolin tone and in his adventurer's spirit and fertile musical imagination. Buddy will demonstrate some “Monroe Style” mandolin music & perform some of Bills tunes along with some of his own compositions. Buddy will be backed up by Back Roads singer/guitarist Kathy DeVine.

Shafaatullankhan -- Exploration into the Art of Indian Classical Music
This concert will include pieces on the Tabla (Drums) and a recitation of the language of Indian Drums. Mr. Khan will also include pieces on the sitar accompanied by tabla and Tanpura.

A program that will explore the music form that through many ages has captured the imagination of composers and audiences alike. The duo will be discussing that particular subject performing live music samples from Baroque to Late Romantic Era.

Mecca Bodega is a percussive driven band from New York City featuring imaginative rhythmists Marc and Paul Mueller. With seven CD releases and extraordinary live performances, they create a unique, refreshing sound that is both hypnotic and filled with dynamic energy.

Mark Valenti  - Eclectic Classical Piano

The program will offer displays an eclectic group of classical piano pieces chosen for a diverse audience. This music serves as an excellent overview of the evolution of piano styles from the elegant gracefulness of Classicism to the passionate lyricism of Romanticism through the atmospheric Impressionism of Debussy to the rhythmic percussiveness of Modernism.
