Foncho
Castellar is a world-renowned artist who plays the diatonic accordion,
as well as the piano, guitar, and percussion. A composer, lyricist and
vocalist, he has been recording and playing for almost thirty years. He
was born in Barranquilla, Colombia, where he picked up the accordion his
father never had the time to play. Foncho played odd jobs and benefits
for soldiers until he immigrated to the United States in 1974, and began
his musical career in New York. He formed "Los Alegres de Colombia,"
a group that toured throughout the United States, performing on the same
bill with Tito Puente, Jose Feliciano, Hector Lavoa, Junior Gonzales,
Johnny Ventura, and others. Foncho and Los Alegres de Colombia have promoted
the cumbia and vallenato rhythms throughout the world as the only Colombian
musical group dedicated to the interpretation of popular and folkloric
music from their native country. Foncho contributes to the advancement
of his native culture by teaching children and aspiring performers for
free, and is the author of several method books for learning the diatonic
accordion.
He is the winner of several arts festivals and has recently played at
the Museum of Natural History, Queens Theater in the Park, Queens Museum
of Art, Aaron Davis Hall, Hostos College, Manhattan Community College,
Hartford College, and other cultural venues. He has been an integral part
of fundraising efforts for disadvantaged citizens in Puerto Rico, Honduras,
Colombia, Ecuador, and El Salvador. Foncho and Los Alegres de Colombia
are favored performers with the President of Colombia, the Colombia Lions
Club, and U.N. dignitaries and ambassadors.
Foncho Castellar es un conocido acordeonista quien además toca
piano,guitarra y percusión. Compositor y cantautor por casi treinta
años. Nació en Barranquillla, Colombia donde comienza a
tocar por primera vez la acordeón que su padre nunca tuvo tiempo
de tocar. Foncho realizó numerosos trabajos antes de emigrar a
los Estados Unidos en 1974, donde comienza su carrera profesional. Formó
el grupo “Los Alegres de Colombia” con los que ha viajado a
través de los Estados Unidos,compartiendo escenarios con Tito Puente,
Jose Feliciano, Héctor Lavoa, Junior Gonzáles, Johnny Ventura,y
otros. Foncho y Los Alegres de Colombia ha promovido los rítmos
de la cumbia y el vallenato a través del mundo. Fue el pimero en
grabar e interpretar nuestra música en inglés, y es el único
artista colombiano que interpreta el Himno Nacional de Colombia y el de
los Estados Unidos antes de cada una de sus presentaciones.
Foncho contribuye a la preservación de su cultura nativa enseñando
a los niños y realizando presentaciones gratuítas, incluso
es autor de muchos libros que enseñan en forma didáctica
a tocar el acordeón. Ha sido ganador de numerosos festivales de
arte y ha recientemente tocado en el Museo de Historia Natural, Queens
Theatre in the Park, Queens Museum of Art, Aaron Davis Hall, Hostos College,
Manhattan Community College, Hartford College, entre otros. Ha sido un
eje importante en la recaudación de fondos para los ciudadanos
desposeídos en Puerto Rico, Honduras,Colombia, Ecuador, y el Salvador.
Foncho y Los Alegres de Colombia son los artistas favoritos del Presidente
de Colombia , Club de Leones y dignatarios y embajadores de las Naciones
Unidas.
