DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES -- Presented by the Islip Arts Council and sponsored by the Bohlsen Foundation at the East Islip Public Library. The series features 1-hour-long live music and lecture. Thursdays at 7 PM. Seating is limited, and on a first-come basis. The Library is handicapped accessible.
Buddy Merriam Discover Bluegrass and the Bill Monroe Story DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES Thursday 7:00 PM For over 30 years, Buddy Merriam and his band Back Roads have been bringing the edgy, hard-driving sound of traditional bluegrass to audiences throughout the country. Buddy's powerhouse Monroe-style mandolin propels the band ever forward, together with Jerry Oland's rock-solid banjo and the strong, emotional singing of Ernie Sykes and Kathy DeVine. Buddy has long been a favorite of the Emelin Theatre's audience, and for good reason. As Mr. Monroe himself might have said, "Mighty fine!"
Shafaatullan Khan: “The history of Indian Classical music” DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES Thursday 7:00 PM Shafaat Khan, world-renowned Indian Classical musician. In the rich history of Indian Classical music, Mr. Khan has distinguished himself by being the first known artist to have attained simultaneous excellence in performing the sitar, surbuhar and tabla.
Anna Karkowska: The Art of Variation DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES Thursday 7:00 PM The sisters will present The Art of Variation, a program that will explore the music form that through many ages has captured the imagination of composers and audiences alike. The duo will be discussing that particular subject performing live music samples from Baroque to Late Romantic Era.
Mecca Bodega DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES Thursday 7:00 PM Ethereal music for the soul that features the hammered dulcimer and hand percussion, Mecca Bodega is a percussive driven band from New York City featuring imaginative rhythmists: Marc and Paul Mueller. African drums and Brazilian percussion to hammered dulcimer, found objects, guitars, didgeridoo, and voice. Mecca Bodega is a part of the Music Under New York program and when not touring can be heard performing all over the city, from Grand Central Station to Lincoln Center.
Mark Valenti: Eclectic Classical Piano DISCOVER MUSIC SERIES Thursday 7:00 PM The program will display an eclectic group of classical piano pieces chosen for a diverse audience. The music will serve as an excellent overview of the evolution of piano styles from the elegant gracefulness of Classicism to the passionate lyricism of Romanticism through the atmospheric Impressionism of Debussy to the rhythmic percussiveness of Modernism.
